The basal purpose of SMART was to provide a free rebuild of the NWP to and for certain connected insiders. That has not worked out too well as the SP had already evaluated and decided on abandonment. But hey(for the SP) if someone wants to pay you for it why not? And(for the insiders)if someone is willing to use other peoples' money to reconstruct your freight op, hey why not?

It's nice to see the SMART rebuild to the south, if only to the north side of Sir Francis Drake. And very satisfying to see the SR dpw types have to watch as the intersection they lusted to pave over gets ripped up again. The same mentality that yuppied out 4th Street. In the 70's San Rafael still had a very homey mainstream America ambiance. That's why Lucas did some filming there.
