The GG Bridge cannot carry heavy Bart trains without major structural modifications, but I think studies were done years ago that showed light rail would be possible, if traffic lanes were reduced. Obviously, reduction of lanes is not likely to be politically popular any time soon. However, if one lane was given to light rail it might be that a huge traffic reduction would occur in the remaining lanes as thousands of drivers used the new system.
