Its just my thoughts but I think UP will not let the 49 on "their" railroad because it would take away their thunder with steam power.

Someone correct me, but I think the last time the 49 had a major move on old SP /UP rails was before the merger. Now, who knows.

The UP may not have a steam engine that will run for all we know or be as reliable as the #4449. For all their fancy shops, equipment and the budget they can't hold a candle to the 49 crew. The 49 is class act, done by people that know their stuff without a blank check concept that UP seems to have. The UP is too worried who gets credit for what, not putting anything on the table.

I know it won't happen but can you imagine what DM could do with the Mallet in Sacramento if he had deep pockets like the UP?
