Sorry, I neglected to post details with the picture. My father took this picture in 1950 with Kodachrome ASA 10 film. NP Baldwin 501 is on passenger train 314 climbing Sunshine hill just compass west (rr east) of Moscow ID, visible in the background. The train is barely into Washington from Idaho. The plowed field in the valley, visible in front of (and below) the engine is the present location of Wilson, site of the McGregor fertilizer facility. The UP tracks can be seen just this side of the highway, below the white car.

500 and 501 (original numbers 175 and 176) came to the P&L in 1948. When trains 312 & 313 were discontinued in 1950 the 500 went to Seattle. 501 lasted until summer 1952 when it was replaced by GP7 556 on trains 311-314. Both Baldwins, along with the 6-axle 525, were eventually repowered by EMD 16-567C engines and worked the Pasco hump yard for several years. 501 survived the BN merger and lasted until summer 1972.
