For clarity, on May 1, 1971, Amtrak began operating a tri-weekly through train between San Diego and Seattle, with service as far north as Oakland only on the other four days of the week, plus two pairs of San Diegans, and the daily Super Chief and tri-weekly Sunset.
In June 1972, the through Coast train was replaced between LA and San Diego with a third pair of San Diegans, due to the poor timekeeping of the southward through train, and then ran LA-Seattle three days and LA-Oakland four days.
In June 1973, the LA-Seattle through train began operating daily.
