A train is "an engine or motor, or more than one engine or motor coupled, with or without cars, displaying markers and authorized to occupy a main track." If you haven't noticed, the rear BART car displays "markers." I assume they have some degree of authority to occupy their main track, such as a proceed indication sent through the automation system.
