Congratulations to nearly all involved in this thread, for an informative and civil discussion.

I've often wondered about the feasibility of sending all that dynamic brake generated electricity back in to the "grid". Catenary at along grades and locomotives equipped with pantagraphs could collected the electricity now wasted as heat.

Probably more expensive than the value of electricty.
