One more thing,
As accessible as the UP is north of Spokane, do respect the local folk's property. The vast majority of people I met/ran into up there were very friendly and the live and let live attitude seemed strong. Some of the locals gave me good info on lesser-known spots to catch trains, too. Spent a lot of time chatting with area old guys while waiting on a train. Some really neat people.
That said, respect the private property. The concept is taken very seriously up around those parts.
