Regarding a couple of questions above--the 1771 "saved" from Placerville by CSRM got taken apart and then got left in a heap to be ravaged by weather and vandals, another sterling example of many of their "preservation" efforts. I wonder how many of the parts were scattered and lost.
As for the 0-6-0 from Alameda, I believe it went to GGRM, but don't know what's become of it since. As I recall, it was extremely rusty and deteriorated from sitting in a park right next to SF Bay. While I'm at it, I believe the 0-6-0 that was in a park in Stockton is still up in Virginia City; the V&T acquired it for restoration about twenty years ago but gave up on it.
It's interesting to note how long this thread is growing--obviously, SP steam still has quite a following. BTW, anybody know the current status of the 3420 in El Paso, TX? It was restored and ran for awhile in the 80s, but I haven't heard anything in a long time.
