Which is why I'm project manager for getting a storage building constructed at the PLA. We have a number of significant pieces that absolutely need indoor storage, the 330 being high on the list, the Santa Fe dome car (dome area is basically a hot house), painted and restored cars and locos plus wood cars that need indoors right now.
A steel structure protects in order of importance: UV, fire, precipitation, termites and other insects, theft, vandalism, dust. The PLA, while at the forefront in trackage, location and rolling stock, is nearly in last place as far as equipment protection. Museums such as Orange Empire and Rio Vista are light years ahead in this area, and it is a leverage point to protect the huge investment in labor and materials that go into projects such as these. Hopefully we will have something on the books for the storage building in the next year or so.
