HRS has more going for it than one might think. Although they are small, they do have a restoration facility and a carbarn, and expansion of those is a possibility. They have done considerable equipment restoration and track maintenance. And they had sufficient funds to ship one of their Whitcombs to Wasatch Railroad Contractors for a full overhaul. Although I don't live in Hawaii, I've been a member of HRS for 20 years and have seen the considerable progress they have made.
The problem they had with Traveltown was based on bad information and a certain amount of inexperience by the person(s) making the enquiry. They had heard that Traveltown was in financial distress and about to close down (obviously incorrect--I don't know where that rumor came from). Unfortunately, they prefaced their request for the Oahu cars by referencing this supposed financial failure, and Traveltown's director took great offence.
