There was a more minor celebration of the true completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on September 6, 1869 when the Central Pacific line from Sacramento to Oakland over Altamont Pass was completed. The Niles Canyon Railway is doing specials commemorating this event due to the fact that it's ROW is part of the line. The NCRY will have two steam mallets operating. It would be cool if the UP could join in but it's only a month away so that's not going to happen.
