160.830 might be one of the channels used by the ICTF intermodal ramp. Did you hear a radio ID beep or chirp at the end of each transmission? It's common to hear non-railroad talk on these ICTF channels - they talk about sports, women, movies, vacations, etc. I think most of them are truck drivers moving containers or chassis around. Occasionally you'll hear reference to 20-footers or 40-footers or APL. Otherwise it doesn't sound railroad-related at all.
I've heard 160.485 used by UP in Dolores, usually for radio tests. They give the engine number, then test 1 2 3...radio test, out.
One frequency I'm curious about is 160.620. I've heard what sounds like the Maywood Police Department on many different occasions. Since Maywood PD is licensed on 153.620 (7 MHz lower), I thought my radio was bad. So I tried another with the same results. The police traffic comes and goes, but for a few weeks in February, the only time I heard anything was on Wednesday nights starting about 7:00pm. A couple months ago I heard them on a Saturday afternoon. This evening, however, the UP herders at East Los Angeles were using 160.620 with no police traffic to be heard. (by the way, Maywood is less than a mile south of UP's East LA yard)
Keep these posts coming, I appreciate the info for the timetables.
