Where to "chase" Big Boy From LV to Barstow?

We are planning on going to Southern California (in spite of my misgivings about being in that area) to see, hear, and feel the Big Boy. However, I am not familiar with that area, and the maps I can find seem to indicate that roads near the tracks are very rural, and maybe very windy. So what would be your recommendations for places to view it in action?
We do plan on seeing it on display in Las Vegas on the 7th.
