As far as "catching up to your schedule", you really had to watch it from SLO to LA. They would run the Smokie out of BI at about 5:00PM. Around Ventura or Oxnard you would catch your time. Remember, a train was never allowed to leave an advertised time ahead of its schedule.
The weed weasels would use this as a test to test crews.
As far as Atk hitting another truck, thats how they play the game. I have hit & killed over 15 trucks thru that area. Some of the growers had signs, right next to 101 at their crossings that said, If you get hit by a train at this crossing and you live, you are fired." They were written in English & Spanish. Also , the Calif. DMV & CHP has allowed those growers to let those trucks haul those illegal trailers and loads. The worst area was between Salinas and King City. Thats been over 60 years that I know of.
And don't forget, SP holds the the "record" for killing over (30 or more ?) workers at one of the crossing just west of Chulalar, near Spence. Red Fraiser was the Hoghead out of SLO.
