SMART is hurrying to begin service to Larkspur in hopes of improving its chances of voter approval of the March sales tax measure.
SMART planning is so flaky; tracks on a new Richmond-San Rafael bridge in 20 years? Remember the Key System? No match for the raw power of the highway lobby. And the highway lobby is not going away with electric cars(now eco green), possibly self driving, and of course a huge increase in population and the number of autos in California.
Actually the iconic nature of the GG Bridge works in favor of a second deck for electric rail as it would be hardly noticeable, whereas the GG Bridge district always wanted a second deck for toll-paying automobiles, a second deck which would be massive and change the appearance of the Bridge. Plus the City is unlikely to approve any more connecting freeway projects that would wipe out housing and businesses.
