Well, as my wife will atest, I have been wrong twice, maybe 4 times.
These are the facts as I remember them:
After the Tunnel burned North of San Rafael, They ended service at the draw bridge. That allowed only the gravel outfit to get a few cars out. There was an outfit there that fixed & reconditioned rail cars.
In all those years, I never saw a locomotive sitting or stored there. The only "CAR" was the car that was pulled out of Sausalto in the last move. Later, it was taken to Tiburon and put on the AT&SF barge.
Anything else was shipped by barge until the tunnel was fixed.
Now, as far as the Tunnel between San Rafael & Detour: It was a double track with a steel shell. Now I know a lot of people will tell me I am full of it but I rode that after there was only one track left. (This was Silverthorne's last run into Tiburon. Steam and all. (I was all of maybe 7 to 10?) Many years later I went thru it on my motorcycle and it still had steel walls, , corrugated like subway sides.
I enjoyed the history of Marin. Wish more was in print with pics. We were forced to run from Redwood, to Detour, up to the bridge and back to the HS.for PE. What ties that were left, every 3rd one was long for the 3rd rail.
I still have the patch board from the San Anselmo Depot and a phone from somewhere off the line when they were tearing it down. (my mother knew what was worth getting.)
And some 10 yrs later, I would be an engineer for the SP.
