If the check was for $10K or more, nobody could accept it, and no bank would deposit it (let alone cash it), without a W9 and extensive identifying information. The amount triggers all sorts of money laundering-related rules. Your random homeless dumpster diver would have difficulty providing all of that. So even if the check was found, it was probably shredded.
I've had stuff like that happen. Went into default when a mortgage payment check was lost in the mail; took a couple of months to get it straightened out (Citibank *really* wanted my house, I guess). After that, I started taking advantage of electronic bill pay from my bank.
