Some would be surprised ( and a bit pi$$ed off too, when they get the bill ) if they knew how much " Air Freight " NEVER SEES THE INSIDE OF AN AIRPLANE, or even an airport in some cases. Forward Air is a big " Air Freight " and general freight TRUCKING COMPANY that operates up & down the West Coast. With the recent Federal Hours of Service changes, a driver can now run 11 hours " Driving " out of 14 hours total on duty time. LA to The Bay Area or Sacramento was always do - able even in the old 10 hours driving days, LA to Reno too via U.S. 395. Now a good driver can legally turn LA to Las Vegas, Seattle to Spokane, or Seattle to Hermiston. All subject to seasonal weather issues of course.
When I drove for Conway Western Express in Orange County, Emery Airfreight ( also owned by Consolidated Freightways, as was CWX at the time ) used to drop ship overflow Next Day & Second Day " AIR FREIGHT " at the Santa Fe Springs CWX dock, where it was loaded into CWX doubles trailers and TRUCKED to SAC or SFO. When I transferred to CWX Seattle, I used to be sent to SeaTac Airport on Friday evenings to pickup Emery overflow Next Day & Second Day AIR freight. It would spend the weekend in a doubles trailer rolling South to San Jose ( lotsa computer goodies for H-P ). The AIR freight would be delivered to Emery San Jose or Oakland Airport early Monday AM, for customer pickup. The customer didn't know the difference.
Don't EVER pay air freight rates for anything traveling less than 600 miles, unless you or your company has a screaming rate with the air freight company.
