For packages, you have options. It's only for letters that you must use USPS.
Check out UPS Ground for short distances. Within about 200 miles of me, UPS Ground delivers the next afternoon. Up to about 500 miles, it's second afternoon. And they're pretty consistent about doing that. For packages of a reasonable size (typical Amazon boxes), it's about $10-12, with tracking. You'd have to pay double or triple to get next-morning delivery by "air" or Express Mail, and I suspect for those short distances generic next-day (not next-morning) "Air" stuff gets thrown in a Ground truck.
Don't bother with FedEx, if my experience this year with them is any indication. "Next Day" is a lie. "Whenever it gets there, if it gets there" is more like it. Hey, doesn't FedEx carry USPS between main post offices?
