When you read Rule 606 in ETT in the 70s for 16th st limits, it doesn't give any particular track reference except freight lead 1. Get to 1980, now its limits extend from signals 330 feet east of MP 5 for track 1,2,3 and 4. Electric 5 and 6 are just track 5 and 6. So maybe 1 and 2 at some time were referred to as Mainline 1 and 2 and it just kept. I have radio recordings from the early 70s and 16st telling a switch engine to go past the red interlocking signal on mainline 1 to the rear of the freight on mainline 1. I do remember when Ongerth came on the scene, authority was changed to Freight 1 and 2. 3 and 4 were still called mainline tracks
