The Salmonberry trail seems a lot more doable than the Great Redwood trail. Sammie needs the rail and the state lottery might pay for it(just kidding). The slides ,sinks and unstable soil through the Eel river canyon would require a couple of bulldozers to keep it clear and open . Maybe like a snow-covered mountain pass it would be closed during the winter. I guessed a couple of years ago when it was first proposed that it might take a billion dollars to create the Great Redwood trail. I was wrong . Hogwash. A state analyst recently put the price tag at five billion. I suspect in time all of Southern Pacific's secondary track will become hiking trails. That includes the Tillamook,Coos bay, Toledo, Siskyou ,NWP,Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Diego Eastern. Better hiking trails and bike paths the being parceled out and lost forever.
