Companies can sustain an operating loss for as long as other sources of funds are available. Those can be investors, bank loans, selling more stock, or simply money in the bank left over from previous profits. If those other sources dry up, though, operating profits are needed in order to stay in business. And to pay back loans, if those were used.

Last I heard, though, both KCS and CP are profitable.
