On a lot of roads, an engineer off a railroad, say #1, may be qualified for a section of track on another road, say #2. Railroad #2 needs a hoghead but doesn't have anyone qualified. If an agreement is in place between to two carriers, they may ask for an engineer as a pilot over their track. Pilot shows up, and its done.
The new crew takes the train from point A to B, gets off and goes home. As far as pay goes, timekeepers know who is supposed to be paid for what and it shows up on your check. If it doesn't, call your LC and have them deal with it.
