The gauge change on the MRS1 was made by moving the wheels on one side in or out. I am not sure how they were fastened to the axle. At one time in (I think) the late 50's the Army tried one out on the Rio Grande's narrow gauge out of Durango. To say the least, the engine was a strange looking beast off set to one side and always worked with one of the K-37's.

Hopefully someone can provide more "intimate" details.
