Paid my first visits there around 1978 as well. A couple years before my drivers license, so I'd ride the OCTD bus from El Toro up to Santa Ana, then Amtrak to LAUPT. You could walk right out the end of the platform, past the jail (with no interference), stay right and end up at the river or head left and find yourself amongst all the dead diesels. Yes, lots of Alcos, but I was equally impressed by all the DD35s and U50s. Or should I say saddened, for not having seen them in action.
