Re: If you don't like the name "Yuba Gap", don't look

It's all very simple. Neither the CP nor the SP could have erred in any way shape or form no matter what name they picked for this location because they owned the railroad; it was their choice. The CP and SP named this location "Yuba Pass", which makes "Yuba Gap" totally incorrect, period. No appeal.

If you want to talk about a geological formation, or place on a USGS map, which has the same or similar name, fine. But since it has nothing to do with the station name at this location on the CP/SP, bringing up such a point is totally irrelevant.

Railroads have always named stations according to their own whims. Sometimes the localities which spring up around the station take their name from the railroad's name (Williams and Dunnigan come to mind), sometimes not (Hotlum and Kegg are still out in the middle of nowhere). Fremont on the SN was between Mikon Tower and Woodland. Fremont on the WP is 90+ miles distant, actually in the town of Fremont, CA, but this doesn't make the SN's "Fremont" inocrrect.

The situation with SP standard time, SP standard clocks, and watch comparison as compared to the time signals from WWVH, Boulder, was the same. Whenever there was a difference between the SP's time and WWVH, by definintion, WWVH was wrong.

I agree with JLY completely. For a railfan to insist on an incorrect name -- these people pride themselves on "correctness" -- is completely inconsistent. If they worked for a railroad, insisting on such "incorrectness" would get them fired, particularly when it comes to station names used on main track authorities like schedules, train orders, and track warrants (and DTC for that matter).
