As I said, the "correct" name for a railroad station is what the railroad gives it. Others like you, "railfans", the USGS, the local communities, etc. may call it something else, but in the context of the railroad itself, you and all of them are "incorrect".

When you're on a railroad, the place names of the "outisde world" don't matter. Essentially they don't exist, which means that it makes no difference what an "outside name" may or may not be.

The original speculation, several threads ago, was essentially "what is the correct name of this place [on the SP]?". The answer to this question can be only "what the railroad called it", i.e. "Yuba Pass". This makes "Yuba Gap" incorrect. And yes, a railroad can change a station name at any time, which the CP/SP never did with Yuba Pass. Caltrans on I-80 may call it "Yuba Gap", but that isn't the railroad's name for the station.

It all depends on whether you want to be "railroad correct" or "otherwise correct"; it's your choice. However, you can't use the "otherwise corect" name in the railroad context; that's quite improper. Asserting, as some have done here, that the railroad is "wrong", is a non-squitur.

To restate the obvious, I don't really care whether or not any of you want to call it "Yuba Gap". However, don't try to convice me this is/was the CP/SP's name for the place, or that the CP/SP were incorrect in the name they chose, because neither are true.
