The NCRA-NWP's second coming is due to state of California past budget largesse, a feel good side effect of long lost budget good times. If you haven't noticed happy days are not here again.
It won't be long before we know how much or more importantly how little state transport subsidy to expect in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if the 6 budget ballot issues fail(I sent mine in today - thumbs down on all 6 insults to the public's intelligence). In June we will find out if BART's militant unions have the cojones to go on strike or if they will cave to a cut in compensation. Either way there won't be many happy campers.
Subsidies are all about politics. NCRA-NWP doesn't even have a union, as far as I know. How much support do you think there will be to continue to subsidize what is in reality a museum operation in the face of serious labor unrest with the real operators.
I give NCRA-NWP 2 years to go broke. The North Bay in crowd will just have to speed up SMART to fill the vacuum and save face.
And don't count on federal stimulus funds to come to the rescue for long. My guess is the $800 billion is a one time bonanza.
