From my perspective, the upper signal doesn't seem dim at all. It looks to be about the same as the bottom. However, as pointed out, it's not my perspective that counts -- it's the engineer's.

Incidentally, you can identify the trains by the location (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and by the locomotive on the approaching train. The train at the platform is one of the daily New Jersey Transit runs between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. The approaching train, with an ALP-44 electric leading, is one of the weekend New York City-Atlantic City ACES (Atlantic City Express Service) runs.

The ACES trains, supported by three large Atlantic City casino-hotel complexes, began service last February. They run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with one intermediate stop (Newark, N.J.). The consists include four specially-outfitted bilevel coaches, with both first-class and regular coach service.

Motive power for the trains is a NJT PL42AC diesel on one end and the ALP-44 electic motor on the other, trainlined for push-pull operation. On southbound runs, the diesel is leading but the electric powers the train out of New York Penn Station to Newark, where the diesel goes on line.

The train follows Amtrak's Northeast Corridor to Frankford Junction, in northeast Philadelphia, where it reverses direction to cross the Delaware River to follow NJT's ex-PRSL line to Atlantic City, with the electric leading as a cab car. Northbound, the diesel leads the train back to Frankford Junction, where the train reverses again and the electric goes on line to lead the train back to New York.
