I believe it was the assistant conductor and they are paid pretty well -- but not enough to get shot. And I heard he took TWO bullets.

A passenger in another news report said the train sat there for SEVEN hours so the police could conduct their investigation and remove the body. It happened on single track so it sounds like the whole railroad ground to a halt for seven hours or more.
