Unfortunately, for practical purposes, Siemens is the only supplier for new passenger locomotives in the US. There are a couple of small companies, and of course older stuff can still be rebuilt (within limits set by EPA and, for use of state money, CARB). But other than those fringe operations, it's Siemens or bust.
Hmmm. I wonder. If the supply of F40 sleds is used up, is anybody looking at early F59PHI carbodies for the purpose of building more cabbages?
