Ken and Rich both - I love the stuff you're posting... I came to know the line when I was living in Playa del Rey in 1988 and by then it was a completely different animal. In fact... it was pretty un-inviting, and as a railfan, I was frankly so uninterested at first, that it took me about three or four years to finally get out and start shooting pictures of it (which I regret now, I think I missed a lot of cowl units on the line due to that).
Reading your memories really brings the line to life. I've walked much of the Redondo Branch, although I never saw a train on it.
I never explored the line east of LAirport until after it was too late, which I regret the most. To be honest, I was too chicken, but now that I've gone over and looked at the line there, I realize that there were some really cool shots to be had, had I just had the guts to get out there and shoot it.
Rich, there is a LAR substation still standing in Inglewood. It's in the cemetary there.
