FRA on-time performance report: [
railroads.dot.gov]
Hard to parse, since it's generated for Congress and mostly highlights more than details. Still trying to find something at Amtrak or BTS that can be downloaded and played with in Excel rather than having to be scraped or retyped from PDFs. But if you want to spend some time perusing it ... yes, the best OTP is in the NEC and some state-supported routes. A particularly good standout is the state-supported Capitol Corridor route in California, which amazingly runs almost entirely on UP (except for Caltrain between Santa Clara and San Jose); Cap Corridor is also mostly double track (some installed or reinstalled at state expense). Sunset Limited has clawed its way above 60% on-time, but the Zephyr and SW Chief are both in the basement. The Starlate isn't as late as often as it once was. Zephyr (UP & BNSF), SW Chief (mostly BNSF), and Silver Meteor (mostly CSX and NE Corridor) are the worst performers.
While passing through yesterday, I saw #6 in Sacramento and was amazed. 2 GEs and cars that stretched out through the whole platform length. Haven't seen an Amtrak train that size in years. Hour & change late, of course, but that's better than par for the Zephyr. Has Beech Grove finally been repaired enough equipment that trains can be extended to meet demand again?
