Yes, he was avoiding "private travel" which explicitly included Greyhound and Amtrak. Was also amusing that he spent "about $200" in fares, and spent about the same to fly home. That $200 might not have covered even SF-LA on Amtrak, base fare (no extras).

Yes, there are some commuter trains included, but trains were not the point; there were just the right move in some cases.
