It's also interesting that a 4-8-4 would venture on the Monterey Branch. I don't think there were any limits on weight, but turning the locomotive could be a problem past Fort Ord. The turntable at Pacific Grove could only handle a 4-6-2 with a short tender. Otherwise I guess they turned on the Ord balloon track??
