The units are generally considered to be poor performers for the tasks asked of them. That's why it's common to see them m.u.ed with a conventional locomotive, or not being used at all.

As an aside, the UPY1378 (EMD MP15DC equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter) is now assigned to the Roseville / Sacramento area, as its original lease was extended for another year. Originally intended to be used in the Oakland yard, it has a number of apparently unresolvable issues and crews there refused to use it after nearly a year of testing.
