On the SP all rail mounted MOW Living Cars (outfits) with the exception of the Systen Rail Laying Gang were replaced with 4 man automotive trailers by the late 60's. The System Rail Laying Gang was housed in 4 man modules mounted on flat cars and these were replaced by the early 80's when all the Production Gangs (Rail, Tie and Surfacing) were converted to Per deim gangs. (paid living expenses in lieu of living quarters)
The only other rail mounted living cars were in the Relief out fits (Wrecker Derricks), including the infamous Daylight Color painted Roseville relief out fit and these belonged to the car Dept.
The UP kept living cars long after they acquired the SP
I know from experience any one that has ever lived in an outfit car certainly does not find them romantic or nostalgic.
