Ahh, I remember the days over 30 years ago when I was a young fan going to school in Santa Barbara. The SP didn't have a lot of traffic on the Coast Line, but it was always cool to see a freight pass by the Santa Barbara depot. There were two sets of train orders, one for the locomotive crew and the other for the crew riding in the caboose.
The SP had a nice variety of locomotives - tunnel motors, U-boats, and SD-7 on a local. And unfortunately, I took them for granted at the time (although I got a few good photos), but the Coast Starlight always has a pair of those awesome SDP-40Fs.
Once in a while there would be something unusual like a the bicentinniel U-25B or a UP caboose. But the highlight was the 4449 on the Freedom Train returning to Portland. I skipped a class to see that one.
...this is what's happened to the board.
