I don't know this area as well as some other fans, but it seems to me that there's an opportunity here...

If you re-route the Southwest Chief through Amarillo, you gain a city in the Texas Panhandle but lose Albuquerque unless you do a reverse move from Belen. Why not work with the DOTs in New Mexico and Colorado and with Amtrak to add a daily Denver-Belen feeder train to the Chief? You retain the Albuquerque market and also get regional service to and from Denver. It could also serve as the beginnings of eventual higher-speed train serice over the route.
