At the time the station was moved, many thought SP was building a temporary "Butler Building" station to just last a few years until they were able to get rid of the commuter trains. Suspect nobody had any idea that it might still be in use 40 years later.
Initially, the property between 3rd and 4th streets was paved over and became the "SF RV Park" - like KOA but with fewer amenities (basically a place to park) - to make money for SP until they could find somebody to develop it.
The original station, of course, was also supposedly "temporary" when it was built to serve Worlds Fair traffic. It lasted over 50 years. Lots of photos available online.
