It is my understanding that SP planned for their station to be located in the SP building at 65 Market, across the street from the Ferry Building. It would appear that right of way had been purchased from the Third and Townsend station but the Exposition took place before this could be finished and thus the "temporary" station. SP's control over California was so challenged by people such as Governor Hirim Johnson that the railroad gave up the plans out of spite. I am very open for correction on this item.
