It works just as well with VHF radios and should also work with FM radios (the Navy uses the same trick on aircraft carriers to allow personnel who are assigned VHF handheld radios to use 'em inside the ship; reception is usually crappy in a closed compartment - as one might expect - but it's acceptable enough in the main corridors where the wires (which are actually repeater antennas) are installed.
