I've heard that demand in China has the prices of many metals (including scrap iron) skyrocketing again. If the line hasn't been formally abandoned through the STB yet, then someone could file during the abandonment process to buy the line. Be warned you would have to pay full scrap value and for the property with the intention of railbanking or operating it.
Biggest problem is their rail couldn't handle 286k car - A Hulcher supervisor told me that they were called often to clean up derailments in the last couple years of operations.
Thre needs to be some way to suspend or reduce taxes to preserve unused or under-used rail infastructure.
