I did a grand 15-day circuit of the U.S. using a Rail Pass in October 1976 riding mostly routes I had never ridden before:
Lone Star
Southwest Limited
Coast Starlight
Puget Sound
Empire Builder (In retrospect I wish I had taken the North Coast Hiawatha)
Broadway Limited
Montrealer
Adirondack (my vote for best Amtrak-era equipment. All D&H including the rebuilt PAs.)
Lakeshore Limited
and a few NEC trains
My stop-off points were Oakland/SF, Portland, New York City, and Montreal.
