Ca. SR97 is a doozey. 65MPH and no "yellow line separation". A little tight for my liking.
I was NB coming down the hill from Grass Lake on a mid-Summer day in 2000 and had just caught a NB mixed with a quartet of SD45T-2's, my favorite SP locomotive model.
I waited 'til the end of the train, and thought I would have plenty of time to catch it at Dorris at the North side of the tunnel. Looking at the maps, it appears that SP arcs away and the curves would slow the train down, allowing me to casually get ahead of it by doing the speed limit. That's how it appears on the map.....
Well, 65 wasn't fast enough for this one, and I ended up beside the tail end at MacDoel. I could have sped up, but the windows that were down allowed a bee, or wasp, or something else (cricket?) to slap my Left ear so hard, it made me drive onto the opposing lane. I don't know if it was the surprise of it, or the pain that made me do it, but a 65MPH swerve into oncoming traffic is sobering enough.
