In the case of UP, it would probably have been just before the merger with C&NW, which was in early 1995. All MP, WP and MKT locomotives had long since been repainted or retired, and none of them were ever "patched."

Another good question would be which railroad took the longest to get rid of pre-merger paint jobs. I'd vote for IC/ICG on this one. And CP/SOO still hasn't gotten all of it's ex-MILW units painted; some are STILL patched!
