I submit images to quite a few magazines. Generally, I find that they want images that have not been up-sized and are at least 8 1/2" x 11" @ 300 ppi. Also, they want flattened, uncompressed TIFF files. This means you can crop to your hearts content, as long as the final image is at least 2550 pixels by 3300 pixels after cropping. They prefer to do the sharpening as well. Changes in contrast, color balance, etc. are fine as long as you have a good understanding of the color workflow and are working with a calibrated monitor. Without calibration, what you see is not what they see!
