Great photo. I remember once or twice as a kid, we used Route 33 as an alternative to 99 or 101 between Northern and Southern California, before I-5 was completed. I seem to recall SP running a few through freights on the West Side Line, plus of course the Owl passenger train. I have heard that SP or UP removed the middle part of the line through Los Banos specifically so that CFNR / SJVR could never compete as a through route.
