I chuckled when I read "Firebaugh XL5." This was a play on the space-themed
children's TV series titled "Fireball XL5" that ran on NBC on Saturday mornings from 1963
to 1965, using puppets for the characters (Fireball XL5 was the name of the spaceship).

Not exactly. San Joaquin Division timetable #196 of Oct. 28, 1962 and all subsequent
San Joaquin Division timetables show no stop for the Owl either in Selma or Kingsburg.
Same for a 1964 SP passenger timetable.
On the other hand, a 1957 San Joaquin Division timetable indicates conditional stops
at Selma and Kingsburg for the Owl, so service was discontinued sometime between 1957 and 1962 (for Kingsburg, service probably ended in 1962 when CTC was completed between Bakersfield and the Kingsburg train order office was closed).
For some photos of the Owl in its later years in the San Joaquin Valley, there was an
article about the train in the Winter 2003 (#75) issue of SP Trainline. Check the
website of the SP Historical & Technical Society for back issue availability.
